The largest Orthodox church in Bucharest stands not far from Union Square. The original church, built by Scarlat Ghika in 1767-1768, stood here until 1852, when it was replaced by the present Gothic structure. The murals are by Gh. Tattarescu.

The largest Orthodox church in Bucharest stands not far from Union Square. The original church, built by Scarlat Ghika in 1767-1768, stood here until 1852, when it was replaced by the present Gothic structure. The murals are by Gh. Tattarescu.

The church is buit according to a special architectural plan – with a central spire and two towers in front – having the dimensions: length 41m, width 14 m, height 38 m. The style of the building is Gothic, in which elements of Moldavian art predominate. Inside, there are marble columns, artistically colored stained glass windows with biblical scenes and saints, executed in Vienna.
