From: Bucharest, Museum
Adress: Muzeul de Stiinte Naturale “Grigore Antipa”, Şoseaua Pavel D. Kiseleff 1, București 011341
The museum places at number five as the most beautiful natural history museums in Europe. It is at the same time the largest museum of its kind in the country. It holds one of the most valuable and diverse scientific collections in Romania, consisting of over two million vertebrates and invertebrates (zoological, paleontological, geological-mineralogy and world ethnography pieces, some unique worldwide), preserved in a recreational environment that perfectly imitates the natural one.
The museum is exposed the only whole skeleton of one of the largest mammals that ever existed, related to the elephant, namely Deinotherium gigantissimum (disappeared 2.5 million years ago), discovered in Vaslui county, in 1894, by the geologist Grigore Ştefănescu.
For a period, the museum in Bucharest was unique in the world by the modern way of exhibition designed by Grigore Antipa, never encountered at the beginning of the last century.
The museum was established on November 3, 1834, and has been operating since 1908. The permanent exhibition has been modernized, becoming an interactive and dynamic one, in which visitors have access to information on digital screens (info-touch), video documentaries or special headphones for listening to explanations.
