Description

The National Bank of Romania (BNR) is the central bank of Romania, the only institution authorized to issue money (monetary symbols). Its fundamental objective is to ensure price stability. In addition, the Bank elaborates the country’s monetary policy, regulates and supervises the banking system and manages the international reserves of Romania.

It is an independent public institution, run by a board of directors whose president is the governor. It is headquartered in Bucharest and has a network of 19 branches scattered throughout the country.

The National Bank of Romania was established on April 17, 1880. From the chronological perspective it is the 19th central bank in the world. His first governor was Ion I. Campineanu, but the real founder of the institution was Eugen Carada.

The National Bank has its headquarters in the building from Lipscani street no. 25, an architectural monument built between 1882-1889 and the one in Doamnei Street no. 8, neoclassical style construction from 1938-1950. The Bank is also operating in the Chrissoveloni Palace in their immediate vicinity, on Lipscani Street.
